Welcome to Paro! After an awe-inspiring flight that crosses the Himalayan Mountains, offering spectacular views of the towering Himalayan peaks, you will arrive in Paro. At the airport, one of our local Travelous, English-speaking representatives will be holding a sign with your name printed on it. Your representative will take you to your hotel in Paro and provide assistance with check-in. (Note: Tourist Visa included)

Day 2
Paro

After checking into your hotel, you will embark on a tour of the area, the first visit being the Ta Dzong, once a fortified lookout tower that is now the National Museum. The museum has a wide assortment of ancient paintings, armors, philatelic displays and "fields of Buddhas", which Buddhists often visualize while meditating. You will then hike down the trail to visit the Rinpung Dzong meaning "fortress of the heap of jewels". It has a long and fascinating history. Along the wooden galleries lining the courtyard of the Rinpung Dzong are fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore.

Once you've had lunch, you will visit Kichu Lhakhang, the oldest and most sacred temple in the country. From there you will be taken to the ruin Drugyal Dzong (Bhutan Victory Fort), which was built in 1646 to commemorate Bhutan's victory over Tibetan invaders during the 1600s.

Day 3
Paro

Today you will hike to Taktsang or the "Tiger"s Nest" Monastery perched precariously on the cliff 900m above Paro valley. Guru Rimpoche, the 8th century spiritual master, is said to have flown on the back of a tigress to meditate in a cave where Taktsang Monastery now stands.

A delicious traditional lunch will be served in the Cafeteria Restaurant, located about halfway up the mountain. After lunch, you will have time to explore this incredible monastery, and if you wish, you can sit for a short meditation before you hike down to the valley floor.

Spend the evening in the tranquil town of Paro, relaxing or exploring this deeply spiritual and outstandingly gorgeous area.

Day 4
Saga La - Paro Trekking Region

In the morning, you will drive to Haa Valley across Chele La Pass (3810m). You will meet your trekking crews and enjoy a delicious hot lunch prepared by them.

After lunch, you will begin your trek through an unpaved motor road for less than hour, keeping yourself on the left side of the mountain villages. Taking the footpath trail on the right side of the village will lead you to a gradual ascent through a yak herders camp. You will cross meadows adorned with blooming Iris, Primula, Aster, and other flowers. Then you continue uphill to Sagala camp (3600m) below Sagala pass.

Bask in the incredible views of Mt. Jomolhari (7326m) and other mountain peaks that loom in the distance. The view of the Haa and Paro valley are breathtaking on a sunny day.

Sagala is an ideal location for bird watching. As you make your way through woodsy areas, keep your eyes peel for a chance to spot the Blood Pheasant, the Himalayan Monal and other bird species that are native to this area.

Day 5
Paro Trekking Region - Ningula

Wake up at dawn to catch a breathtaking sunrise over the Mt. Jumolhari and Jitchu Drake ice-capped peaks.

From the camp, you will start climbing for 30 minutes to reach the Sagala pass (3550 meters). On a sunny day, you will have expansive views of the vast mountains that appear to be higher than the heavens. After winding your way through the colorful rhododendron forest trail walking and crossing through meadows that are bathed in wildflowers, you will finally reach the top of the ridge at 4100 meters. Here, take some time to revel in the wonders of nature as it displays incredulous views of the Haa Valley.

You will continue your windy way through lush forests of Hemlock and Juniper until you reach Ningula (your camp) at 3850 meters.

Day 6
Paro - Paro Trekking Region - Thimphu

After breakfast, you will embark on a short descent and then follow the ridge through vast meadows. As the meadows turn to forest, you will begin to climb uphill towards Kung Karpo pass, through a spectacular forest of tall rhododendron trees.

The trail is continues uphill until you reach an area of meadows adorned with many stone cairns. The view of Haa valley is spectacular as you climb up through these stone cairns to reach the first pass before Kung Karpo. After hiking on the ridges, you will reach Kung Karpo (Sky Burial at 4350 meters). If you climb further to the top of the mountain, you can see the site where sky burials (an ancient Buddhist practice of leaving corpses out on the mountain in order to feed vultures) is done. From Kung Karpo, you will climb hills and descend valleys with panoramic views of Paro valley on the left and Haa Valley on the right. A view of the Kila Goenpa Nunnery below is also spectacular.

Once you reach the final ridge, you will begin your completely downhill descent until you arrive at Chelela pass (3980 meters), which is one of the highest motor able passes in Bhutan. Your vehicle and driver will be waiting here to transfer you to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

Day 7
Punakha

After breakfast, embark on a scenic journey to Punakha, with a stop for tea at Dochu La Pass (3,100 meters), where on a clear day, you can get spectacular views of the Himalayas. From the pass, continue downhill through the dense, lush forests of rhododendron, fir and hemlock. You will arrive at Punakha, the old capital of Bhutan, after traversing through rice fields and along the banks of Punakha River.

Today you visit the Punakha Dzong, which you will find majestically standing on an island between the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. The city's dzong is one of the most photographed of all Bhutan's ancient fortresses, and you will find pictures of it hanging in hotels and restaurants throughout the country. The dzong is joined to the mainland by an arched wooden bridge, and contains many precious relics from the days when successive kings reigned the kingdom from this valley. The dzong serves as the winter home of the monastic body.

Day 8
Punakha

After breakfast, you will hike through a forest of pines and farmlands along the bank of Pho Chu River for about 2 hours till you reach Samdhingkha (put in). Your rafting crew will be waiting here for you. Then start rafting along the Pho Chu River coming across stretches of Class II and IV rapids. Upon arriving at a beach-like stretch of sand, some distance from a Chorten, you will be served lunch on the sandy embankment. The post-lunch rafting session will continue till you reach the relatively placid section of the river below the Punakha Dzong.

Later in the afternoon, you can take excursion to Wangduephodrang. You can visit new Bajo and nearby villages which are known for their slate and stone carvings.

Biking options: In and around Punakha Valley. You can also ride to and from Wangduephodrang.

Punakha

After breakfast, you will be taken twelve kilometers north of Punakha and begin a hour hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Chorten, a delightful 3-story chorten that looks down on the upper Punakha Valley. The views of the valley and the surrounding snow-capped mountains are stunning. You can linger here for some time, relaxing and simply appreciating the harmonious beauty of the location. In the afternoon, you will be taken to the Metshina Village and hike through rice paddies up to Chimi Lhakhang Temple. This temple is dedicated to the great Yogi in the 14th century known as Drukpa Kuenley, or the "Divine Madman," who was believed to bless women who sought fertility.Enjoy a quiet evening in this tranquil oasis, a perfect place for aimless wandering and cultural exploration.

Day 10
Paro

Today you will journey back to Paro via the Dochula Pass and stop in Thimphu en route.

At Dochula, you will visit the new Druk Wangyal Monastery, which is a one of a kind in the country, with elaborate paintings depicting the lineage of the present monarchy and their visionary works.

You will stop in Thimphu for a fun city tour. Start with the Memorial Chorten (built in memory of the third King of Bhutan who reigned from 1952-1972), the fascinating Nunnery temple, the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, the Folk Heritage Museum and the School of Arts and Crafts (also known as the painting school).

After a mouthwatering lunch, you will visit a traditional paper factory where you will see the art of papermaking. Then head up to the Kuenselphodrang (giant Buddha statute) overlooking Thimphu valley. This 169 foot statue is reputed to be the largest bronze Buddha statue in the world. You will then visit the majestic Tashichhodzong, (characterized by a distinct fortress architecture found in Buddhist kingdoms), the seat of the national government.

Biking options:You can ride bikes downhill from Dochula Las Pass and along the new expressway before reaching Thimphu.

Waterproof Tents

Accomodation for trekking in Bhutan is arranged as camping tents.Trekkers sleep in a tent, with foam pads placed on rubber mats acting as an insulator. They are advised to bring their own sleeping bags.the tents are Nepal made A-shaped or North Face dome tents. Your guides and helpers have their own tents as well. The campsites will be at a designated place close to streams so that there is water to cook meals. Hot water in a bucket is provided to wash hands face and brush teeth.

In some places, there is a stone building which staff uses for cooking and trekkers can also use it for dinning and shelter in emergency.

  • Visas (unless otherwise indicated), Inspection, Customs, Immigration and Naturalization fees Additional fuel surcharges on cruises

  • any other activities or items not explicitly advertised as included in the price of a Tour

 

Reservations/Booking and Deposits:  To book a Tour, each Traveler (or leader of a Group of Travelers) must submit:

 

A.     A completed booking form signed electronically by the main Traveler. By submitting the booking form on the payments page, the traveler accepts our full Terms and Conditions.  

B.     A deposit of 30% of the Tour price (minimum $250 per person), is due immediately upon booking.

C.     The full balance of the trip cost is due ninety days (90) before the trip departure date.

D.      If you book your trip with us ninety days (90 days) or less before the departure date, the full cost of the trip is due at that time.

E.      In the instance payment is made by certified check or wire transfer, reservations will only commence once the check is cleared.

F.      Availability of Services and Accommodations cannot be guaranteed until a Tour is booked.  We will exercise our best efforts to book the Services and Accommodations described in the Tour Itinerary, however, in busy seasons and with client bookings made within 90 days of Tour date, we may be forced to offer substitutes.  In this instance we will notify you as soon as possible and try to substitute comparable Services and Accommodations based on availability.

G.     Ticketing & credit card processing for international transport and other select domestic airfare pertaining to a specific country is done by a 3rd party and not included in your total land package price unless otherwise stated.

H.     Cancellations of confirmed bookings 90 days or more prior to departure will receive full refund minus a $250 (per person) administrative fee and any non-refundable paid fees (e.g. non-refundable airfare, cruise or hotel deposits). 60-89 days will be subject to loss of 30% of program price. 30-59 days will be subject to loss of 50% of program price. 29 days or less will be subject to loss of 100% of program price.

       *NOTE: Certain destinations require a 30% non-refundable deposit at the time of booking and therefore, would supersede our standard cancellation policy prior to 90 days in this instance.
