Day 8
Petra

The wonder of Petra is without a doubt, Jordan's most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction. It is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabateans; an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2000 years ago. It was turned into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome.

Entrance to the city is through the Siq, a narrow gorge, over 1 kilometer in length flanked on either side by soaring, 80 meters high cliffs. Just walking through the Siq is an experience in itself. The colors and formations of the rocks are dazzling. As you reach the end of the Siq you will catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury). This is an awe-inspiring experience. A massive facade, carved out of the sheer, dusky pink, rock-face and dwarfing everything around it. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of an important Nabatean king and represents the engineering genius of these ancient people.

The Treasury is just the first of the many wonders that make up Petra. You will need at least four or five days to really explore everything here. As you enter the Petra valley you will be overwhelmed by the natural beauty of this place and its outstanding architectural achievements. There are hundreds of elaborate rock-cut tombs with intricate carvings - unlike the houses, which were destroyed mostly by earthquakes, the tombs were carved to last throughout the afterlife and 500 have survived, empty but bewitching as you file past their dark openings. Here, also is a massive Nabatean-built, Roman-style theatre, seating 3,000 people. There are obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars & colonnaded streets, and high above, overlooking the valley, is the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery - a flight of 800 rock cut steps takes you there. Lunch will be served at Basin Restaurant inside the Petra site.

Petra Marriott - Premium Mountain View

Day 9
Madaba - Ma'In

Transfer in private vehicle from Petra to Madaba. Driving time is 4 hours.

Welcome to Madaba. Best known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, Madaba is home to the famous 6th century Mosaic Map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. With two million pieces of vividly colored local stone, it depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns as far as the Nile Delta. The Madaba Mosaic Map covers the floor of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Built in 1896 AD, over the remains of a much earlier 6th century Byzantine church. The mosaic panel enclosing the Map was originally around 15.6 X 6m, 94 square meters, only about a quarter of which is preserved.

Continue to visit Mount Nebo, the mountaintop memorial of Moses with captivating views of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea and The River Jordan. A small Byzantine church was built there by the early Christians, which has been expanded into a vast complex. During his visit to Jordan in 2001, the Late Pope John Paul II held a sermon here that was attended by some 20,000 faithful.

Transfer in private vehicle from Dana Nature Reserve to Ma'in, most famous for its hot springs and hyper thermal waterrfall. The site is also linked to the Biblical Herod the Great who is said to have bathed in its medicinal waters. Originating from winter rainfalls in the highland plains of Jordan, they eventually feed the 109 hot and cold springs in the valley. This water is naturally heated to temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius by underground lava fissures as it makes its way through the valley before emptying into the Zarqa river basin in northeast Jordan. Driving time is 45 minutes.

Day 10
Ma'In - Amman

Enjoy your free day at Ma'In Hot Springs Hotel - Climb to the top of the mountain and enjoy a dramatic picnic breakfast on the top of the Ma"in water fall and discover the source of the Hot Spring. In the evening, take in the breathtaking sunset at Panorama Restaurant overlooking the Dead Sea and Jerusalem.

In the early evening, your driver will be waiting to head down town for a walking tour of the old city Amman to mix with the locals, eat Arabic Sweets (Knafeh) and drink fruits cocktails at a famous stand. Return transfer provided.
