Paro

Welcome to Paro! After an awe-inspiring flight that crosses the Himalayan Mountains, offering spectacular views of the towering Himalayan peaks, you will arrive in Paro. At the airport, one of our local Travelous, English-speaking representatives will be holding a sign with your name printed on it. Your representative will take you to your hotel in Paro and provide assistance with check-in. (Note: Tourist Visa included)

Day 2
Paro - Thimphu

Today you will hike to Taktsang or the "Tiger's Nest" Monastery perched precariously on the cliff 900m above Paro valley.

After breakfast, you will start you trek towards the most famous monastery in Bhutan. Guru Rimpoche, the 8th century spiritual master, is said to have flown on the back of a tigress to meditate in a cave where Taktsang Monastery now stands. Lunch will be served in the Cafeteria Restaurant, located about halfway up the mountain. Explore the monastery, and if you wish, you can sit for a short meditation before you hike down to the valley floor.

Enjoy an evening at leisure to explore Paro or to enjoy the views and facilities at your hotel.

Embark on a 2 hour journey from Paro to the National capital of Bhutan -Thimphu.It is a beautiful drive through the Himalayan terrain along the Paro river

Thimphu

Your day begins with visits to the Memorial Chorten (built in memory of the third King of Bhutan who reigned from 1952-1972), the fascinating Nunnery temple, the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, the Folk Heritage Museum and the School of Arts and Crafts (also known as the painting school).

After delving into a mouthwatering lunch, you will visit a traditional paper factory where you will dive into the art of papermaking. Then head up to the Kuenselphodrang (giant Buddha statute) overlooking Thimphu valley. This 169 foot statue is reputed to be the largest bronze Buddha statue in the world. You will then visit the majestic Tashichhodzong, the seat of the national government.

Day 4
Punakha

After breakfast, embark on a scenic journey to Punakha, with a stop for tea at Dochu La Pass (3,100 meters), where on a clear day, you can get spectacular views of the Himalayas. From the pass, continue downhill through the dense, lush forests of rhododendron, fir and hemlock.

At Dochula, you will visit the new Druk Wangyal Monastery, which is a one of a kind in the country, with elaborate paintings depicting the lineage of the present monarchy and their visionary works.

You will arrive at Punakha, the old capital of Bhutan, after traversing through rice fields and along the banks of the Punakha River. After lunch, visit the Punakha Dzong, which you will find majestically standing on an island between the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. The city's dzong is one of the most photographed of all Bhutan's ancient fortresses, and you will find pictures of it hanging in hotels and restaurants throughout the country. The dzong is joined to the mainland by an arched wooden bridge, and contains many precious relics from the days when successive kings reigned the kingdom from this valley. The dzong serves as the winter home of the monastic body.

Gangtey

You will begin the day by taking an adventurous ride to Gangtey that will leave you breathless as you sail across mountains passes and descend into deep valleys.

Travel through dense forests of oak trees and rhododendrons before coming up to the Dochu-la mountain pass. Ba amazed by the incredible views of Masagang (7,158m), Tsendegang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), and Jejegangphugang (7,158m) that will accompany you along your way.

The journey from here is a series of twists and turns that will take you through a world of bamboo and oak. Arrive in the scenic village of Gangtey, gently nestled in the Phobjikha Valley.

Hike through Phobjikha valley to explore the nearby villages where locals live remarkably simple lives. This beautiful valley is mostly covered with high altitude dwarf bamboo, hidden trails, pine trees and farmhouses with impressive traditional art and wood-carving.

Day 6
Bumthang

After breakfast you will drive to Bumthang, the cultural heartland of Bhutan. The route is along a spectacular winding road, crossing the 3,300-meter-high Pele La pass, where you will see yaks grazing in grassy pastures. Stop in Trongsa in time for a delicious lunch.

After lunch you'll visit Trongsa Dzong, a large fortress and a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. Continue to Bumthang, making your way through lush valleys and hilly forests. Along the way you will stop at a yathra (textile weaving) factory, where the yathras are designed with patterns unique to Bumthang, Watch the weavers at their looms and try to imitate their technique!

Bumthang

Today's sightseeing in Bumthang includes visiting Jakar Dzong, the administrative center of the valley, and Jambey Lhakhang, one of the oldest monasteries in Bhutan which dates all the way back to the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan (the 7th century). The next stop is Kurje Lhakhang, considered to be one of the most sacred places in the area. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche - the founder of Tibetan Buddhism - left his body imprint on the cave when he was meditating. You can also take in the peace and meditate for some time here as well.

After lunch, you will also have a chance to tour Tamshing Lhakhang, a treasure house of interesting religious Buddhist paintings and wall art.

Spend the evening strolling through Bumthang, enjoying its local market or simple basking in the peace of this spiritually rooted area.

Day 8
Mongar

Today, you will begin your journey to eastern Bhutan, highly distinct from western & central Bhutan in terms of development and lifestyle.

Go back in time with a stop in Ura village. Make your way down the cobblestone streets and feel the medieval vibe, partially radiating off of the handfuls of women wearing sheep skin shawls. Continue onward to Mongar. The steepness of the region lends itself to some spectacular views, with rushing waterfalls and sharp drops. The drive on this day is an exhilarating 7 hours, particularly the region crossing Thrumshing La (pass), which peaks at 3,750 meters.

Stop for a picnic lunch at the Pass, enjoying the staggering panoramic views all around. Walk certain stretches of the road with your private vehicle following behind you. This will give you a chance to stretch your legs and take in the wonders of nature.

Mongar

After breakfast, you will drive to Lhuentse -- it is among the few remote districts of Bhutan and is famed for its intricate and colorful weavings. Formerly known as Kurtoe, the region is the ancestral home of Bhutan's royal family.

The landscape is spectacular with stark cliffs, gorges and dense coniferous forests. Explore Khoma Village to see the variety of textiles that are woven here. Any of the locals will be happy to invite you in to their homes for some cultural interaction. In the evening, you will be taken back to Mongar where you will spend the night.

Explore Mongar in the evening. This merchant town is set on a hill and offers many stimulating possibilities for unforgettable experiences. Visit the prayer wheel in the center of town where old friends meet to socialize, shop through the many colorful stores lining the main street, or enjoy the utterly delicious local cuisine that will leave you wanting more.

Day 10
Trashigang

Enjoy a three hour relaxing journey to Trashigang, also known as the "Jewel of the East", passing through several quaint villages.

In the afternoon, you can visit Trashigang Dzong and stroll through the town, absorbing the culture of eastern Bhutan.

The Trashigang Dzong is an imposing fortress that was built on top of a spur, overlooking the Dagmecchu Rive. Invading Tibetan armies would look up while approaching on the river and would see the dzong which appeared to be floating in the air. They would then retreat in fear, yelling "the dzong is a sky dzong, its not on the ground." It has been the political stronghold of Eastern Bhutan for over 300 years.

Day 11
Samdrup Jongkhar

After breakfast, you will drive to Samdrup Jongkhar. Your first visit along the way is to a community school in Rongthung village. Next up is Sherubtse, the only premier college in the country. The impressive clock tower and green surroundings give this college the feel of a Himalayan hill station. Stop at Khaling to see the National Institute for the Disabled (School for the people with visual disabilities). Before arriving at your destination, you will have your lunch in one of the local restaurants on the way. You will arrive at Samdrup Jongkhar after passing through varied villages, landscapes and forests.

Guwhati

After breakfast, you will drive to Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. You will be driving through tea gardens, clear, flowing rivers interspersed with quiet villages, and small townships of vibrant culture.

Unfortunately, we will say goodbye to you today. Transfer to Guwahati airport in a private vehicle for your departure flight. Keep the memories alive and we hope to see you again soon in Bhutan. Stay Travelous!

Mongar town lies on a gentle sloping of Bhutan. The region is well known for its cultivation of maize and Lemon Grass. The locals speak the dialect called "Shar-shop" and they have a very popular tradition of serving the locally brewed alcohol called "ARA" as refreshments to their guest, be it any time of the day.

  • Visas (unless otherwise indicated), Inspection, Customs, Immigration and Naturalization fees Additional fuel surcharges on cruises
  • Travel Insurance including Medical, Lost Baggage and Trip cancellation
  • Optional activities (golf, watersports, etc.)
  • any other activities or items not explicitly advertised as included in the price of a Tour

 

Reservations/Booking and Deposits:  To book a Tour, each Traveler (or leader of a Group of Travelers) must submit:

 

A.     A completed booking form signed electronically by the main Traveler. By submitting the booking form on the payments page, the traveler accepts our full Terms and Conditions.  

B.     A deposit of 30% of the Tour price (minimum $250 per person), is due immediately upon booking.

C.     The full balance of the trip cost is due ninety days (90) before the trip departure date.

D.      If you book your trip with us ninety days (90 days) or less before the departure date, the full cost of the trip is due at that time.

E.      In the instance payment is made by certified check or wire transfer, reservations will only commence once the check is cleared.

F.      Availability of Services and Accommodations cannot be guaranteed until a Tour is booked.  We will exercise our best efforts to book the Services and Accommodations described in the Tour Itinerary, however, in busy seasons and with client bookings made within 90 days of Tour date, we may be forced to offer substitutes.  In this instance we will notify you as soon as possible and try to substitute comparable Services and Accommodations based on availability.

G.     Ticketing & credit card processing for international transport and other select domestic airfare pertaining to a specific country is done by a 3rd party and not included in your total land package price unless otherwise stated.

H.     Cancellations of confirmed bookings 90 days or more prior to departure will receive full refund minus a $250 (per person) administrative fee and any non-refundable paid fees (e.g. non-refundable airfare, cruise or hotel deposits). 60-89 days will be subject to loss of 30% of program price. 30-59 days will be subject to loss of 50% of program price. 29 days or less will be subject to loss of 100% of program price.

       *NOTE: Certain destinations require a 30% non-refundable deposit at the time of booking and therefore, would supersede our standard cancellation policy prior to 90 days in this instance.
