Drive East to see the Desert Castles of Jordan. Beautiful examples of both early Islamic art and architecture, stand as a testament to a fascinating era in Jordan's rich history. Their fine mosaics, frescoes, stone carvings and illustration , inspired by the best in Persian and Graeco - Roman traditions, tell countless stories of the life as it was during the eighth century. Called castles because of their imposing stature, the desert complexes actually served various purposes such as caravan stations, agricultur al trade cent e r s, resort pavilions and outposts that helped distant rulers forge ties with local bedouins. Several of these preserved compounds, are clustered to the east and south of Amman.

Qusair Amra, one of the best preserved monuments, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its interior walls and ceilings are covered with lively frescoes, and two of the rooms are paved with colorful mosaics. Qasr al - Kharrana, has been restored and in excellent condition. Day 4
Madaba - Dana Nature Reserve

Welcome to Madaba. Best known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, Madaba is home to the famous 6th century Mosaic Map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. With two million pieces of vividly colored local stone, it depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns as far as the Nile Delta. The Madaba Mosaic Map covers the floor of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Built in 1896 AD, over the remains of a much earlier 6th century Byzantine church. The mosaic panel enclosing the Map was originally around 15.6 X 6m, 94 square meters, only about a quarter of which is preserved.

Continue to visit Mount Nebo, the mountaintop memorial of Moses with captivating views of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea and The River Jordan. A small Byzantine church was built there by the early Christians, which has been expanded into a vast complex. During his visit to Jordan in 2001, the Late Pope John Paul II held a sermon here that was attended by some 20,000 faithful.

Stop enroute to Dana at Mujib View Point overlooking the Grand Caynon of Jordan then visit the Crusaders Castle in Kerak. Check in at Dana Guesthouse for dinner & overnight.

Day 6
Petra - Dead Sea Jordan

The wonder of Petra is without a doubt, Jordan's most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction. It is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabateans; an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2000 years ago. It was turned into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome.

Entrance to the city is through the Siq, a narrow gorge, over 1 kilometer in length flanked on either side by soaring, 80 meters high cliffs. Just walking through the Siq is an experience in itself. The colors and formations of the rocks are dazzling. As you reach the end of the Siq you will catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury). This is an awe-inspiring experience. A massive facade, carved out of the sheer, dusky pink, rock-face and dwarfing everything around it. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of an important Nabatean king and represents the engineering genius of these ancient people.

The Treasury is just the first of the many wonders that make up Petra. You will need at least four or five days to really explore everything here. As you enter the Petra valley you will be overwhelmed by the natural beauty of this place and its outstanding architectural achievements. There are hundreds of elaborate rock-cut tombs with intricate carvings - unlike the houses, which were destroyed mostly by earthquakes, the tombs were carved to last throughout the afterlife and 500 have survived, empty but bewitching as you file past their dark openings. Here, also is a massive Nabatean-built, Roman-style theatre, seating 3,000 people. There are obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars & colonnaded streets, and high above, overlooking the valley, is the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery - a flight of 800 rock cut steps takes you there. Lunch will be served at Basin Restaurant inside the Petra site.

Transfer in private vehicle from Petra to the Dead Sea. Driving time is approximately 3.5 hours.
