Day 3
Villa de Leyva

After breakfast, your local guide and driver will take you on a drive through the countryside to the colonial village of Zipaquira.

Visit the world's only salt cathedral, an antiquated salt mine that was brilliantly transformed into a functioning salt cathedral. Be amazed by the icons and sculptures that were carved into the walls of this salt cave by talented sculptors and artists. Upon leaving the cathedral, explore the village's main square where you will have the chance to enjoy locally baked desserts and the handicraft market before continuing on to the Encenillo Reserve.

After lunch, the Natural Encenillo Reserve provides an opportunity to stretch your legs amongst the peace and quiet of the countryside. Enjoy bird watching, and observe the myriad varieties of orchids growing in the park.

Continue to the colonial town of Villa de Leyva. With its winding cobbled streets, lined on either side by orange roofed white-washed houses, and surrounded by towering mountains, Villa de Leyva takes you back in time. With scarcely a modern building in site, this village where time stands still speaks of quieter days and simpler times.

Enjoy an evening at leisure to stroll through the cobblestone streets.

Founded in 1541, it served as the capital of the department until 1826 when the state capital moved to Medellin. The town has kept much of its colonial charm, including the narrow streets and whitewashed colonial style buildings, many of which have a large central courtyard in which to relax away from the midday heat.

The central plaza is dominated by the principal church of the town. The plaza is also home to a daily market where vendors sell various tamarind product that grow locally. Take a tour of the stalls and try a few samples of this local delicacy. There are several churches and important colonial buildings to visit but the greatest pleasure is in exploring the narrow streets infused with rich history and a vibrant culture.
