See the gothic Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the ever-evolving Independence Square and the elaborate Presidential and Archbishop's palaces dating back to seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Continue to the cobbled Plaza de San Francisco to visit the Church and Convent of St. Francis, a beautiful renaissance church. The imposing structure has the distinction of being the largest architectural ensemble among the historical structures of colonial Latin America.

From there, you will head approximately 11 miles (18 Km.) north of downtown Quito where you will visit "Mitad del Mundo" (Middle of the World) and the Equator Monument situated at 0'0'0' latitude. This is where the eighteenth century French Geodesic Expedition erected one of the three pyramids as landmarks for their planet calculations to deduct the shape of the planet. These pyramids are in a complex that replicates colonial architecture: a typical central plaza, a church and bull-fighting ring. You will then visit of the museum of Ethnic groups of Ecuador.
