Dambulla Cave Temple is a vast isolated rock mass and it was here that king Valagambahu took refuge in the 01st century B.C. when fleeing from his enemies. He later turned the caves into a rock temple. The Golden Temple of Dambulla has been the center of pilgrimage for Buddhists and Hindus alike for 22 centuries. It is Sri Lanka"s most popular historic site. The Cave monastery, home to Buddhist monks is covered with exquisite 2,000 year-old murals depicting the life and times of the Lord Buddha. The shrines also house a collection of 157 statues of Buddha in various sizes and poses, including a 15 meter long reclining Buddha and vividly colored frescoes on the walls and ceiling, making this the largest antique painted surface in the world.

You will arrive in Habarana in the afternoon and will have the option of enjoying your beautiful hotel facilities.

This Afternoon you will embark on a Safari.Minneriya is a haven for the elephants that migrate from surrounding jungles to enjoy the lush grass fields on the banks of the Minneriya reservoir, during the dry season. Reports of elephant sightings range from an impressive 100 to 200. The central feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Tank (built in 3rd century AD by King Mahasena). This tank is generally known as a place to observe the elephants that come to bathe and graze on the grasses as well as the huge flocks of birds that come to fish in the shallow waters.

Day 3
Habarana

After breakfast, you will be taken to the magnificent ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

It was under King Parakramabu I, who ruled in the late 11th century, that Polonnaruwa became a magnificent walled city. He built the vast reservoir, the Sea of Parakram, which is still in use today, and ordered the construction of monasteries, temples, palaces, bathing pools and Buddhist statues, all set in a forested park surrounded by moats. During his period of rule, it is said that Sri Lanka was known as the Granary of the East.

You will then head to Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Asia"s most protected and well-preserved city of the first millennium.

You will climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as the 8th Wonder of the World. This rock fortress was built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century A.D. and was a royal citadel for more than 18 years. In a sheltered pocket, accessed by a spiral stairway, are the famous frescoes. The summit of the rock, with an area of nearly one hectare, was the site of the palace, and the outer wall was built on the very brink of the precipice. The UNESCO sponsored Central Cultural Fund has restored Sigiriya 5th century water gardens to their former glory.

Day 4
Kandy

After breakfast, you will take a short drive up to the village of Hiriwadunna, located near a picturesque reservoir. The trek will begin with a scenic walk along the bund of an ancient Wewa, an artificial reservoir.

During a three-hour walk, you will experience the activities of the villagers and observe rich birdlife, maybe even a few crocodiles. Next you will cross over a river in a small catamaran to reach a farm on the other side, whose owners will receive you warmly. Here, you can enjoy the hospitality of a modest peasant family. Continue the trek through dense bush-terrain, home to many animals such as monkeys, bears and the occasional elephant.

Continue on your journey to the lovely city of Kandy. Kandy lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is both an administrative and religious city.

Day 5
Kandy

You will begin your fascinating tour of Kandy with a visit to the famous Temple of the Tooth Relic!

The Temple of the Tooth Relic is located in the royal palace complex, which houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site, partly due to the temple.

You will then visit the lush gardens in Peradeniya. Located in Peradeniya near Kandy, the gardens are noted for its rich and varied collections of tropical woody plants. Occupying 59 hectares (146 acres), it has about 4,000 species of plants. The most important specimens of the garden include palms, some of which are planted in impressive avenues. Significant, too, are the collections of orchids, gymnosperms, and flowering trees.

Your final stop is at a cultural dance performance where you will see various rituals and ceremonies, which are centuries old. These are based on the folk religion and folk beliefs going back to Sinhalese era, before the dawn of Buddhism.

Day 6
Yala National Park

Today, you will be driven to the beautiful Yala National Park with a stop at the picturesque English-style city of Nuwara Eliya.

Nuwara Eliya is set in the heart of tea-country and is a town where the British succeeded in creating a replica of the English countryside, with Georgian and Queen Anne homes. Well-kept lawns with hedges, an Anglican church, a famous golf course and a handful of sprawling parks hint at nostalgia for distant places. Situated 6,200 feet above sea level the air is cool and fresh- a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

You will then continue on to Yala National Park, the most visited National Park in Sri Lanka, chiefly because it displays a wide array of natural beauty, in addition to housing significant wildlife. From soaking up sun on the white sandy beaches to jumping on an animal safari and observing leopards and elephants in their natural habitat, you can do it all here!

As a center for past civilizations, the great King Ravana established his kingdom here with Ravana Kotte, now submerged in the sea, as its boundary. Seafaring traders brought Indo-Aryan civilization with them, as Yala was situated in their trading route. A large number of ancient tanks are evidence of a rich agricultural civilization dating back to the 5th century BC.
