Bustling Cairo, "the city of a thousand minarets" is the largest city in the Middle-East, groaning under the weight of over 20 million inhabitants. On its west side lies the capital of the Old Kingdom, Memphis, still hinting of ancient days of grandeur and triumph. On its east side lies the beautiful Garden City, with its lush, sprawling gardens and expansive ornamental palaces. Now a modern metropolis, Cairo is an utterly unique place that offers a vast array of monuments and activities appealing to every kind of visitor. From medieval markets to oriental dance shows and from Roman ruins to mighty Pyramids of Giza & Sphinx, there is never a dull moment in this city!

Transfer in private vehicle with English speaking driver from the Airport to your hotel for overnight.

Day 2
Cairo

Today, you will be taken to Dahshur, which lies at 25-mile distance from Cairo.

Dahshur is a royal necropolis located in the desert on the west bank of the Nile. It is known chiefly for several pyramids, two of which are among the oldest, largest and best preserved in Egypt, built from 2613-2589 BC.

You will explore the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, which were constructed during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu (2613-2589 BC), father of Khufu of the Old Kingdom. The shape of the Bent Pyramid is unique; it represents a transitional pyramid form believed to have been the result of an engineering crisis encountered during its construction. The Red Pyramid is the world's first true smooth-sided pyramid.

After a delicious meal experiencing this area's ethnic cuisine, you will be brought back to your hotel in Cairo.

After your day tour, you will be taken back to your hotel for a chance to freshen up before your Sunset Camel Ride. Set out before dusk towards the Ancient Pyramids of Giza where camels are waiting to take you on an unforgettable night in the desert! Take in the incredible sights set against a fiery sky as your camel gently paces through the golden sand dunes. Enjoy dinner at Andrea's New Giza, a traditional Egyptian restaurant, before returning to your hotel for the night.

Day 3
Cairo

Get ready for an adventurous day exploring the vibrant city of Giza! Embark on a full day tour with your private certified Egyptologist who will provide a fascinating introduction to each of the three famed pyramids of Giza. You will have some free time to wander about these awe-inspiring pyramids and to visit the Solar Boat Museum which houses the intact solar ship vessel from Ancient Egypt.

Following the Great Pyramids, you will continue across the plateau for a photo opportunity of the pyramids rising from the sands, with the Cairo skyline in the background. A short drive to the city side of the plateau finds you standing at the feet of the Sphinx, the enigmatic symbol of Egypt for thousands of years.

Head to the Mena House for a delicious lunch and then you're off again to Saqqara, the vast, ancient burial ground, which served as the necropolis for the Ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis. Your guide will provide a brief history of the famous step Pyramid of Zoser and you will have free time to explore the area. Your final stop is Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt. Here you will see artifacts from many of the great rulers of Egypt, including the huge fallen statue of Ramses II.

Day 4
Cairo - Abu Simbel - Aswan

Transfer in private vehicle with full assistance from your hotel to Cairo Airport.

Flight from Cairo to Abu Simbel. Duration is 2.5 hours.

Welcome to Abu Simbel. Rediscovered in 1813 by the Swiss explorer, John Lewis Burckhardt, the temples had long been forgotten and the sands of the desert sands had covered all but the tops of the heads of the huge statues in front of their entrances. Since 1909, when the sand was finally cleared away, these twin temples have become the most famous site in Egypt's south.

Transfer in private vehicle with English speaking driver to directly begin your tour.

Enjoy a private tour of Abu Simbel and its two massive rock temples. Although they seem like monuments to Ramesses II and his wife, both temples are actually temples dedicated to the gods. The larger temple with four huge statues of Ramesses II seated in front is dedicated to Amun, Ptah, and Re-Harakty. The second temple, although significantly smaller than the first, was built to honor Ramesses favorite wife, Nefertari, and is dedicated to the goddess Hathor.

The larger temple is aligned with the sun so that twice a year, the sun shines into its deepest recesses to illuminate a statue of Ramesses and the gods to which the temple is dedicated. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival takes places on February 22nd and October 22nd of every year to much fanfare with several thousand people gathering early in the morning to see this testament to the knowledge and skill that the ancient Egyptians possessed.

After your tour, you will be transferred back to the airport for a short flight to Aswan.

Flight from Abu Simbel to Aswan. Duration is 30 minutes.

Welcome to Aswan. Transfer provided in private vehicle with English speaking driver from the Airport to your hotel.

Aswan is Egypt's southernmost city and arguably one of the most visually stunning in terms of its location and geography. Once the gateway to inner Africa and today as the last port of call for all Nile river cruises, Aswan is particularly known for its two dams and blended Nubian Culture. A city that truly gives you the feeling that you are in Africa as opposed to a desert land, highlights include the Aswan High Dam, Temple of Philae, the Unfinished Obelisk, Mausoleum of Aga Khan, St. SImeon's Monastery and Kalabsha Temple.

Sofitel Old Cataract Hotel - Palace Premium Room

Day 5
Aswan - Nile

Transfer in private vehicle with English speaking driver from your accommodations to the port.

Today, you will embark on an unforgettable 3-night cruise on the luxurious Sonesta Star Goddess. For the next four days, you will sail along the Nile, journeying on the Nile river towards Luxor.

Begin your exciting Aswan tour with a stop at the High Dam of Aswan, a modern architectural project containing more than 18 times the material used to build the Great Pyramid of Khufu! From a pavilion perched over the enormous rock and clay dam, you can admire the Temple of Kalabsha and one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, the impressive Lake Nasser.

Head onwards to the Unfinished Obelisk, which was ordered by the longest reigning female pharaoh, Hatshepsut, ruling the scene for over 22 years. The Obelisk was carved straight out of bedrock but, it was quickly abandoned when large latent cracks were discovered on either sides. This abandoned monument gives great insight into the stone-cutting techniques and tools used by the skilled ancient Egyptian workers.

Your last stop will be at the fascinating Temple of Philae, moved to the Island of Agilkia after the waters of Lake Nasser flooded its original location. Dedicated to the greatly-revered goddess Isis, the Temple attracted thousands of pilgrims yearly during ancient times. Now encircled by crystal blue waters and adorned with lush foliage, the Temple will draw you in to discover the secrets of a bygone era.

Explore Aswan by traditional felucca and sail to Kitchener Island. Take a stroll through the peaceful gardens that display an array of colorful species of plants and trees. Visit the botanical gardens and learn about plants that have been imported from the most remote and exotic places in the world.

Sonesta Star Goddess - Beethoven Suite

Day 6
Nile

The city of Edfu houses the Ptolemaic Temple of Horus, dedicated to the falcon-god Horus and built over a period of two thousand years. You will leave your boat for a tour of this incredible archeological treasure. The inner walls of the building tell the mysterious story of Horus' coming into existence. Horus was born upon the death of his father, Osiris, the god of the underworld who was killed by his brother, Seth. The much beloved goddess Isis brought Horus into life from a piece of Osiris" flesh. Horus later battled Seth and won the battle but lost an eye in the process. Hence, the eye of Horus has important religious symbolism in ancient Egyptian mythology.

The Temple of Edfu was abandoned as a religious monument following Theodosius I's edict banning non-Christian worship within the Roman Empire. Many of the temple's carved reliefs were destroyed in the process. The blackened ceiling of the hypostyle hall, visible today, is believed to be the result of arson intended to destroy religious imagery, which was considered pagan.

Visit the unique Temple of Kom Ombo, remarkable for it its double design. As you walk through the temple complex, notice that the courts, halls, sanctuaries and rooms are duplicated for two sets of gods. The southern half of the temple was dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world. Meanwhile, the northern part of the temple was dedicated to the falcon god Haroeris, also known as Horus the Elder. A few of the three hundred crocodile mummies discovered in the vicinity are displayed in The Crocodile Museum. Make sure to visit the strange instruments resembling surgical tools, located in the southeast corner of the complex!

Sonesta Star Goddess - Beethoven Suite

Day 7
Luxor - Nile

Visit the Valley of the Kings where you will see the intact royal tombs of the Pharaohs. Then, visit the Tombs of Princes in the Valley of the Queens. Stop at the magnificent temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir El-Bahri and then make your way towards the immense Colossi of Memnon. The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. For the past 3,400 years, they have stood in the Theban necropolis, across the River Nile from the modern city of Luxor. Your last stop will be at the Theban Necropolis, which was used for ritual burials for much of pharaonic times.

Visit the famous tomb of King Tutankhamen in conjunction with your West Bank day tour.

Day 8
Luxor

Your private tour day takes you through the East Bank of the Nile to visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak, largely the work of Amenhotep III and Ramesses II, whose colossi and obelisk stand at the entrance. Walk along the Avenue of Sphinx as you enter the complex while your guide explains how the massive facade was constructed and explore the Karnak Open Air Museum that features an amazing array of statuary and reconstructed temple structures.

Converted to a boutique hotel, Al Moudira is a palace located on the West Bank of the Nile and your backdrop for dinner this evening. Enjoy an inspired meal in the beautiful Great Room that blends Mediterranean with Eastern flavor.
