Day 4
Agra

Referred to as one of the wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal in Agra is the epitome of tourism in India and is celebrated for its architectural magnificence and aesthetic beauty.

Though the Taj appears to be amazingly perfect from almost any angle, it is the close-up marble inlay work, which is really astounding. You will have ample time to view and be mesmerized by this outstanding piece of architecture. Admire the changing hues of the majestic building in the rising and setting rays of the sun. You have the option of visiting the Taj Mahal either at sunrise or sunset.

Your full day tour allows you to visit the jewels of the Mughal period today. Visit a perfectly proportioned marble mausoleum Itmad-ud-Daulah. Built by Empress Noor Jahan, the wife of Shahjahan in memory of her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg during 1622-28 AD. The first building to be constructed of pure marble in Moghul India, this two-storey mausoleum is small but perfectly executed, embellished with coloured stone inlay and filigree marble screens.

Explore the Great Fort of Agra, an outstanding example of Mughal architecture and the seat and stronghold of the Mughal Empire under successive generations. Originally planned as an impregnable military structure by Akbar, the Agra Fort, over a period of time, acquired all the elegance, lavishness and majesty of an imperial palace an imposing structure with walls of red sandstone, almost 3 kilometres (two miles) long. The eastern part of the fort (the only part open to visitors) contains palaces, audience halls and mosques built by all the three emperors. The fort presents a good sampling of their favoured architectural styles. The Diwan-i-am (public audience hall) once housed the fabled peacock throne, which incorporated virtually all the important gems of the imperial treasury. The beautiful Diwan-i-khas (private audience hall) and the magnificent Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque) are other attractions within the fort.

The highlight of the tour is the visit to the magnificent Taj Mahal (This tour takes place either at sunrise or sunset). A symphony in white marble, a tribute to eternal love, it was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. There are tombs of Mumtaz and Shahjahan within the mausoleum. Done in white marble, it took 22 years and over 20,000 workers and craftsmen to complete this rhapsody in stone (1630-52 AD). The main structure is set amidst landscaped gardens. While on three sides it is surrounded by high walls, the rear is bound by the river Yamuna.

Located 40 km from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri was built by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1571 in honour of the Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chisti. It was the Mughal capital for 14 years after which it was abandoned due to paucity of water. It is made of red sandstone and combines influences from both Hindu and Mughal architecture. Even to this day, the entrance to the fort is through the road that Akbar built which leads to the Buland Darwaza, a huge 54 metres gateway. Other inspiring monuments in Fatehpur Sikri are the Hiran Minar that Akbar built in memory of his favourite elephant, Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, Birbal's House and the Diwan-i-Khas.

On your way back, stop at Hawa Mahal - Palace of Winds for a chance to capture this amazing sight on camera and as it is in the heart of Jaipur"s shopping district, to buy souvenirs.

On the way back from the fort, you will take a different route. Taking the old abandoned road, you will drive down to an ancient step-well. These are remnants from a bygone era where these wells were used both for water and shelter. A walk through a village, down to a privately owned farmhouse, Dera Amer, will follow this visit. A traditional lunch will be served here. At the farmhouse itself, turban and sari tying demonstrations will be arranged and a henna tattoo artist will also be present to apply henna to the ladies who want their hands decorated.

After lunch, visit the City Palace, the former residence of the royal family, part of which is converted into a museum.
