Day 2
Amman

Transfer to Jerash - one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. The ancient city of Jerash boasts an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6,500 years. Conquered by General Pompey in 63 BC, it came under Roman rule and was one of the ten great Roman cities known as the Decapolis League.

The city's golden age came under Roman rule, during which time it was known as Gerasa. Hidden for centuries in sand before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years, Jerash reveals a fine example of the grand, formal Roman urbanism that is found throughout the Middle East, comprising of paved and colonnaded streets, soaring hilltop temples, handsome theatres, spacious public squares and piazzas, baths, fountains and city walls pierced by towers and gates.

Beneath its external Greco-Roman veneer, Jerash also preserves a subtle blend of east and west. Its architecture, religion and languages reflect a process by which two powerful cultures meshed and coexisted, the Greco-Roman world of the Mediterranean basin and the traditions of the Arab Orient. Lunch at the Lebanese House Restaurant is included with this half day tour.

Continue to Ajloun - The marvels of nature and the genius of medieval Arab military architecture have given northern Jordan two of the most important ecological and historical attractions in the Middle East: the sprawling pine forests of the Ajloun-Dibbine area, and the towering Ayyubid castle, which is an awe-inspiring Islamic fortress that withstood the power of the Crusader armies in the 12th Century. Climbing the narrow staircases and walking through endless hallways takes you back to a time of chivalry and faith, where you can almost imagine the sounds of battling Iron and the site of a raging battlefield.

Ajloun is just a short journey from Jerash through pine forest and olive groves and boasts scores of ancient sites, including water mills, forts and villages, all in the beautiful hills and valleys of north Jordan.

Day 3
Petra

Transfer in private vehicle from Amman to Petra via Madaba & MT. Nebo along the way.

Welcome to Madaba! Best known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, and home to the famous 6th century Mosaic Map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. With two million pieces of vividly colored local stone, it depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns as far as the Nile Delta. The Madaba Mosaic Map covers the floor of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Built in 1896 AD, over the remains of a much earlier 6th century Byzantine church. The mosaic panel enclosing the Map was originally around 15.6 X 6m, 94 square meters, only about a quarter of which is preserved.

Continue to Mount Nebo, the mountaintop memorial of Moses with captivating views of the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea and The River Jordan. A small Byzantine church was built there by early Christians, which has been expanded into a vast complex.

Enjoy the moment as you explore Al Beidha (The White One) better known as Little Petra. Believed to be a suburb of Petra, Little Petra was the entry and exit points for an important trading route for those encompassing the Negev, Gaza, Egypt and Mediterranean Coastal areas. Enter through a narrow gorge called Siq al-Barid or (Cold Siq) due to the high surrounding mountainous walls which prevents the sunlight from warming the area. Like Petra, residences and storage areas are carved into the sandstone dating back to the 1st Century AD. Be sure to ask your guide about the 7000 BC Neolithic village located nearby.

Day 4
Petra - Wadi Rum

Transfer in private vehicle from Petra to Wadi Rum. Driving time is 1.5 hours.

Also known as the 'Valley of the Moon', the Wadi Rum Reserve is a timeless place, virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces. Here, it is the weather and winds that have carved the imposing, towering skyscrapers, so elegantly described by T.E. Lawrence as "vast, echoing and god-like". A maze of monolithic rockscape rise from the desert floor to heights of 1,750 meters. Ideal for hiking, rock climbing and desert trekking, one can enjoy the tranquility of the boundless empty spaces, explore the canyons and water holes to discover 4000-year-old rock drawings and many other spectacular treasures this wilderness holds within.

Explore this vast terrain with your private 4x4 Closed Top jeep safari inside Wadi Rum including the Lawrence Spring, and Khazalee mountain (duration is 2 hrs).

Transfer in private vehicle from Wadi Rum to Petra. Driving time is 1.5 hour.

To visit Petra during daylight is awe-inspiring, to experience it by the light of 1,800 candles is truly an out-of-this-world experience! Walk through the Siq to the Khazneh, following a candle-lit path and enjoy the haunting music of the Bedouin at the Treasury. Tours start at 8.30pm and operates every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Day 5
Petra - Amman

The wonder of Petra is without a doubt, Jordan's most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction. It is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabateans; an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2000 years ago. It was turned into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome.

Entrance to the city is through the Siq, a narrow gorge, over 1 kilometer in length flanked on either side by soaring, 80 meters high cliffs. Just walking through the Siq is an experience in itself. The colors and formations of the rocks are dazzling. As you reach the end of the Siq you will catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury). This is an awe-inspiring experience. A massive facade, carved out of the sheer, dusky pink, rock-face and dwarfing everything around it. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of an important Nabatean king and represents the engineering genius of these ancient people.

The Treasury is just the first of the many wonders that make up Petra. You will need at least four or five days to really explore everything here. As you enter the Petra valley you will be overwhelmed by the natural beauty of this place and its outstanding architectural achievements. There are hundreds of elaborate rock-cut tombs with intricate carvings - unlike the houses, which were destroyed mostly by earthquakes, the tombs were carved to last throughout the afterlife and 500 have survived, empty but bewitching as you file past their dark openings. Here, also is a massive Nabatean-built, Roman-style theatre, seating 3,000 people. There are obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars & colonnaded streets, and high above, overlooking the valley, is the impressive Ad-Deir Monastery - a flight of 800 rock cut steps takes you there. Lunch will be served at Basin Restaurant inside the Petra site.

Transfer in private vehicle from Amman to the Allenby Bridge; your Israeli border crossing to Jerusalem. Includes VIP departure assistance with your Travelous escort.

Transfer in private vehicle with English speaking driver from Allenby Border Crossing to Jerusalem.

The Night Spectacular is a 45-minute light-and-sound display using the walls beneath the Tower of David as a backdrop. The moving images, sent from 20 projectors and two projection rooms, tell a wordless, politically neutral pictorial tale of the history of Jerusalem from the time of the Israelite kings down almost to the present day, treating viewers to dramatically larger-than-life reenactments of the deeds of David, the Romans, the monks, Muhammad, the Crusaders, Suleiman the Magnificent and the rest of the historical family. The sound and light show in Jerusalem is a definite highlight for any first time traveler.

Day 7
Jerusalem

Your day begins with the ascension to the Mt. of Olives for a panoramic view of Jerusalem: Overlooking the Old City, the Mount is covered partly in olive trees, cemeteries and churches - commemorating the Christian events of Jesus. Descend via Palm Sunday Way to visit the Garden of Gethsemane. Enter the Garden of Gethsemane, with its ancient olive trees believed to date back to the times of Christ. We will then reach the gates of the old city and walk the Via Dolorosa (the path Jesus walked, carrying the cross, on his way to crucifixion) and ending at the Church of Holy Sepulchre.

The tour continues in the afternoon with the holiest place in Judaism today, the Western Wall - "Kotel". It is here that we begin to descend through the many layers of Jerusalem's past at the time of the Temple through the Western Wall Tunnels*. Inside, a most interesting model shows the different dwelling periods and history of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. Stand on the site believed to be the nearest spot to the "Holy of Holies".

On to the Garden Tomb, an ancient Jewish sepulchre which matches the New Testament description of the tomb in which Jesus was buried. Protestants sanctify this location as the burial place of Jesus.
