Port of Kusadasi: Best of Ephesus
From $249 pp
Today, you will embark on an adventurous tour through Ephesus, which contains more ancient ruins than any other country in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Drive through the Turkish countryside to the House of the Virgin Mary where the Blessed Virgin is reputed to have spent the last years of her life. The site was made famous by the visits of Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II. In November of 2006, Pope Benedict the 16th paid an official visit to the House of the Virgin Mary a celebrated mass there. Outside is the Fountain of Our Lady where you can taste or collect this blessed water.
As you enter Ephesus, you will pass through the Magnesia Gate and enter the administrative section of this ancient city. The guided walking tour will take you through one of the most magnificent excavations in the world. You"ll see the Odeon, the Fountain of Trajan, the steam baths of Scholastika, the Temple of Hadrian and one of the most famous structures, the Library of Celsus. The facade of the library has two stories with towering Corinthian-style columns on the ground floor and three entrances to the building.
Next, you"ll visit the Grand Theater where Paul preached to large audiences. It is one of the greatest theaters in antiquity with a capacity of 24,000 seats. You"ll then head to the Arcadian way, where Mark Anthony and Cleopatra once rode in procession. Your final visit is to the remains of St. John's Basilica which overlooks Ephesus and was once a great church built on a 2nd century tomb (thought to hold the remains of St. John). While the church is now in ruins, there are frescoes, mosaics and graceful columns that attest to the glory that marked the place where St. John the Evangelist lived and died.
Finally, you will visit Ephesus Theme Park for a refreshing drink and an exclusive interactive show. At the end of your tour, your bus will take you back to Kusadasi where there will be a brief carpet presentation. Or, if you wish, you may return directly to the ship, which is within walking distance. If time permits, you will stop at a leather outlet shop that is used for fashion shows.
