Day 1
Santa Marta

Welcome to Santa Marta! A Travelous representative will be waiting for you in the passenger area holding a sign with your name on it. Transfer in private vehicle.

Founded in 1525 by Don Rodrigo de Bastidas over a beautiful bay, Santa Marta is the oldest town in Colombia. The city boasts a privileged location geographically, neighboring the Sierra Nevada and Tayrona National Park and the popular fishing village of Taganga.

Santa Marta may lack the wealth of colonial assets of it its westerly neighbor, Cartagena, but its charm and character make up for this, and development in its colonial center is on-going and are bringing back the ancient character of this important coastal city.

The city allows the opportunity to absorb the nightlife with a cold Aquila beer and Caribbean fish dish in one of the many restaurants.

Day 2
Cabo De La Vela

Today, a private vehicle will take you to Cabo de Vela, located six hours away from Santa Marta. The journey is strikingly beautiful but difficult as much of it is over dried out sand flats. Because this region of Colombia is quite inaccessible, it has remained virgin and pristine.

La Guajira is Colombia's most northerly department, its Caribbean coastline stretching out to the country's most northerly tip. Traditionally the area was inhabited by indigenous tribes including the Wayuu and Kogi Indians, many of whom still live in the region and so influence the culture of this rugged coastal state. The indigenous presence, dating back to before the Spanish conquest mean that the state is very different from the rest of Colombia, with its own distinct heritage of tribal Indian culture and traditions, cuisine and music.

The look of the local people, their traditional dress (a white smock some embroidered with cultural embalms) and dialect also marks them as something unique in Colombia's rich ethnic reality. Dry and arid deserts dominate the peninsula hemmed in by the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Gulf of Venezuela to the south. Much of the region is sparsely populated but the indigenous culture permeates through the entire area making you feel like you are visiting a very different and distinct part of Colombia. A visit to the Guajira peninsula although one of Colombia more roughed and off the beaten track locations will reward visitors with a side of Colombia's rich social heritage that can't be seen in any other part of the country.

When you get to Uribia, you will have the possibility to eat or drink something and buy some water for the trip.

Day 3
Cabo De La Vela

La Guajira offers excellent opportunities to experience the high adrenaline sports of wind and kite surfing, by way of its long open beaches and strong winds from the north east. The winds are so predominant and continuous that in the Jepirachi region (which quite literally means winds from the north east), 60 wind turbines have been erected providing alternative energy sources to the region.

During these two days, there will be the opportunity to learn the basic techniques with a bilingual instructor. All the equipment necessary, board, sale, harnesses and life jackets are supplied by the instructor. The morning will start with a typical breakfast in the Rancheria before the first of two, one-hour classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. There will be an opportunity to relax on the beach after the first class. The area used for the instruction provides hammocks, beach chairs and sunbathing mats for your comfort. Safety boats are present at all times when training is in progress.
