One single verse in the Sacred Scripture has been always jealousy cherished as Malta’s most treasured “possession”. The text, which has embedded itself firmly into Maltese Life and culture, religion, history and tradition, is an excerpt from the final chapters of the book of the Acts of the Apostles. In this excerpt, we read how the Apostle Paul, who was being held prisoner and on the way to Rome to be sentenced by the Romans, was shipwrecked off the coast of the Island of Melita (Malta). It was during his stay on the Island that St. Paul converted the Maltese into Christians. Although the Maltese were dominated by various rulers, their strong faith in God has kept them together through the years. In the following 7 day tour, we shall be visiting some of the churches that the Maltese continue to cherish.

Between June and September every village in Malta holds its main event of the year - the village festa! It is a mixture of folklore and religion and is held in honour of the patron saint of the village. This tour includes a guided explanation of the parish which is especially decorated for the event. Then we offer you the opportunity to watch the climax of this festa when the statue of the patron saint, which has been carried in procession during the evening, will be brought back to the church. The statue is accompanied by the village band while aerial fireworks are let off, thus bringing to an end the week-long festivities. The village streets are decorated with banners, fairy lights and statues. This is also a good opportunity to meet and miingle with the villagers in celebration. It is an event not to be missed!

Today's tour will start with a trip to Valletta, Malta's capital city, for a guided tour through the bustling streets. This unique city built for gentlemen by gentlemen was built after the Great Siege of 1565 and named after the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Vallette.

In Valletta, we will first stop at the Barrakka Gardens - built on the elevated bastion ramparts. These beautiful gardens commend stunning panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and the three cities. With its fine Baroque architecture, elaborate Grand Masters' monuments and exclusive precious works of art including a Caravaggio this cathedral is not to be missed. After the Cathedral we will visit the Grand Master's Palace. This Magisterial Palace was the official and private residence of the Grand Master of the Order, today the Palace officiate the role of the seat of Maltese Parliament. In the Palace there are two rooms that can be visited; The ArmouryRoom or The State Rooms (please note - the state rooms can only be visited if Parliament is not in session).

After lunch we will head to the Southern part of the island in order to discover the historical area known as the Three Cities: Vittoriosa, Cospicua & Senglea. A drive past Cospicua will bring you to Vittoriosa where you shall walk through the various narrow streets shaded by many historic buildings and churches. From the old quay you will get the opportunity to take a typical "fregatina" for a tour of the famous harbour creeks (subject to weather conditions - price of fregatina not included in price). After a twenty-minute ferry crossing to Gozo, take in the uniqueness of the island, which has a similar history with Malta but astoundingly different natural characteristics. Gozo, a three-hilled island, is greener and more picturesque than Malta as a result of its verdant landscape. It is an island where time stands still, where traditions and customs form part of the daily life of the Islanders. At first glimpse, one is sure to notice that progress and the daily routine maintains a slow pace as most of the population still follow their forefather's trades of farmers and fishermen. During this excursion, visit the temples of Ggantija, the citadel in Victoria, the bay of Xlendi and the Azure Window in Dwejra. Free time for shopping will also be given - Gozo is well known for its woolen goods and handmade lace.

Day 5
Sliema - Malta

Today, you will have a profound spiritual experience at the Sanctuary of the Nativity of Our Lady of Mellieha: According to a very old tradition, St Paul blessed the highly venerated sanctuary of the Nativity of Our Lady of Mellieha. The same tradition holds that the icon of our Lady, painted on the rock face, is the work of St Luke the Evangelist.

After a drive around the coast of Mellieha, you will be given time to spend at leisure on lusciously sandy beaches where you can enjoy the typical Maltese scenery and a delicious lunch. On the way back, stop to visit the beautiful Mosta Dome, which is considered to be the third largest Dome in Europe. Then, head to San Pawl Milqi in Burmarrad for a short visit. This chapel was built in the 17th Century, it was recently restored and is now open as a museum. In 1964, an Italian archaeological team discovered an extensive complex comprising a Roman villa and oil and wine presses both inside and outside the chapel.
