Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon arrival at the airport, you will be greeted by one of our local Travelous, English-speaking representatives who will be holding a sign with your name printed on it. Your guide will escort you to your hotel in Medagama in a private, air-conditioned vehicle and assist you with check-in.

Medagama River Retreat is close to the Bolgoda Lake. In the late afternoon, you have the option to explore the lake by canoe.

Enjoy early morning bird watching around the lake.Birding highlights include water birds such as herons and bitterns. This is also a favorite hunting ground for several other brilliantly plumed birds such as Kingfishers (Common, Pied-crested, Stork-billed and White-breasted Kingfisher) and Bee-eaters (Blue-tailed and Chestnut-headed).

Day 3
Sigiriya

After breakfast, you will head to Sigiria located in the centre of the Country. Take in the rural landscale of Sri Lanka on this four hour drive.

The spectacular ancient city of Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Asia"s most protected and well-preserved city of the first millennium.

In the afternoon, visit Sigiriya Sanctuary and walk up to the ancient monastery site of Pidurangala. The Nature Reserve surrounding Pidurangala and Sigiriya is also ideal for dry zone birding and occasional small mammals such as Mongooses, Giant Squirrel and monkeys (Toque Monkey, Grey Langur). You may look out for the occasional resident birds such as Shama and Blue-faced Malkoha and also much commoner birds such as Black-headed Oriole, Paradise Flycatcher and Goldfronted Chloropsis.

Sigiriya

This medieval city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rose to fame as the capital (10th - 12th century AD) after the decline of Anuradhapura. The entire landscape of the region is punctuated by huge man-made reservoirs, the most famous of which is the Parakrama Samudra or the Sea of Parakrama, larger in size than the Colombo harbour.

Birding highlights include the White-necked Stork, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Black-headed Oriole and Brown-headed and Coppersmith Barbets.

Sigiriya - Kandy

After Parking your bike's you will climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as the 8th Wonder of the World. This rock fortress was built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century A.D. and was a royal citadel for more than 18 years. In a sheltered pocket, accessed by a spiral stairway, are the famous frescoes. The summit of the rock, with an area of nearly one hectare, was the site of the palace, and the outer wall was built on the very brink of the precipice. The UNESCO sponsored Central Cultural Fund has restored Sigiriya 5th century water gardens to their former glory.

Today you will have an exciting journey to Kandy with a stimulating stop to the Spice Garden on route! For centuries, spices have been one of Sri Lanka's celebrated exports. Spices are mostly grown in home gardens and used not only to flavor food but also in medicine and cosmetics. Visit a Spice Garden and sample delicious scents and flavors like cinnamon, ginger, pepper, vanilla, cardamom etc.

Kandy

In the morning, you will leave on a trek to the abodes of Knuckles Wilderness, which is the most rugged and picturesque terrain of Sri Lanka.

Knuckles Wilderness is also part of the eighth and most recent World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka. The grasslands offer panoramic views of rugged hills and the surrounding vegetation. Enjoy the walk in the submontane forests of the reserve. Highlights include several endemic bird species of Sri Lanka that have been spotted in this region.

In the afternoon, you will have an excursion to Kandy, Sri Lanka"s Hill Capital. Stroll through the city with its colorful bazaars and then visit the Sacred Temple of the Tooth where a tooth of Buddha is kept as a relic. There are numerous shrines and temples in the vicinity of Kandy, where you can see rare paintings, frescoes and carvings. Kandy was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and many of the ageless traditions and customs are still preserved here, making it the cultural hub of the island.

Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

You will begin your fascinating tour of Kandy with a visit to the famous Temple of the Tooth Relic!

The Temple of the Tooth Relic is located in the royal palace complex, which houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site, partly due to the temple.

You will then visit the lush gardens in Peradeniya. Located in Peradeniya near Kandy, the gardens are noted for its rich and varied collections of tropical woody plants. Occupying 59 hectares (146 acres), it has about 4,000 species of plants. The most important specimens of the garden include palms, some of which are planted in impressive avenues. Significant, too, are the collections of orchids, gymnosperms, and flowering trees.

Lets head off towards the "Tea Country" of Old Ceylon. Through beautiful mountain scenery continue towards Nuwara Eliya, the most popular hill resort in Sri Lanka, which is situated at 1.885 m high in the central hills. As the road winds higher, you will pass picturesque waterfalls, tumbling down hillsides and vantage points, which afford views over a panorama of rugged hills stretching far into the distance. On the way, visit a tea plantation and a factory, where you can observe the many stages of the tea manufacture.

Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast, you will get ready to visit the mystical National Park, Horton Plains.

Horton Plains, its surroundings forests and the adjoining peak wilderness, are of outstanding scenic beauty and conservation importance, unbelievably rich in flora and fauna. The western slopes support the most extensive area of montane cloud forest surviving in the country.

The scarce endemic bird; Sri Lanka's Whistling Thrush is found here. Other biodiversity highlights include the endemic primate Bear Monkey, Rhinohorned Lizard, Dwarf Lizard, Black-lipped Lizard, Giant Squirrel and Sambar. In addition to these, two new species of mammals have been recorded from here in the recent years (Highland Mouse-deer & Sri Lanka Highland Loris).

You will trek to the sharp precipice called "World"s End" which gives you an overwhelmingly beautiful panoramic view of the area below. Be there before 10 am when the mist starts rolling in! After visiting the majestic Baker"s Falls, you will hike back to your hotel.

In the afternoon, visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens. It was once the pleasure garden of Ravana according to the Indian epic, Ramayana. An attraction here is the rose garden, where the sights and scents of these glorious blooms can be experienced in their infinite variety.

There is also the Orchid House where there is a variety of orchids, many of them endemic to Sri Lanka. Hakgala Botanical gardens is also a perfect location to see the highland phase of the Toque Monkey and the Purple-faced Leaf-monkey and birds such as the Yellow-eared Bulbul, Black Bulbul and the beautiful Scarlet Minivet.

Day 9
Yala National Park

After another short trip to Horton's Plains, you will make your way to Yala National Park by vehicle. The Yala National Park is the most visited National Park in Sri Lanka, mostly because it displays a wide array of natural beauty, in addition to housing significant wildlife.You will arrive here by noon and after eating lunch, you will set up camp for the evening.

In the late afternoon, you will be taken on a Jeep Safari that will unveil to you the habits of 44 different species of mammals, including the Sri Lankan Elephant and Leopard, the Toque Macaque (Old World Monkey), Golden Palm Civet, Red Slender Loris, and the Fishing Cat.

Yala National Park - Bundala National Park

After breakfast, you will take a jeep safari to Bundala National Park.

With over 167 species of birds recorded, Bundala is a fantastic location to observe both resident and migrant bird species. The only RAMSAR site in Sri Lanka, Bundala is one of the best wetland habitats in the island and is home to thousands of adventurous visitors.

Bundala is renowned for its diversity in waders and shore birds, such as Sandpipers, Stints, Lapwings, Terns, Red-shanks and Green-shanks in addition to many other Bush- and Forest-dwellers making it an ornithologist"s paradise. An unforgettable spectacle is the swarms of Greater Flamingos that occupy the salt pans bordering the park during the winter months.

Spend the afternoon at leisure exploring this stunning surroundings of Yala.

Day 11
Yala National Park - Sinharaja Forest Reserve

In the morning, get ready for a Jeep Safari at Udawalawe National Park!

Elephants are frequently seen as well as various species of deer, buffalo, bears and leopards. The third most visited National Park in the island, Udawalawe is a myriad of interesting flora and fauna due to the presence of the Udawalawe reservoir on the Walawe river, the surrounding marshes, forests and grasslands. Another important habitat for a recorded number of 12 amphibian species, 21 species of fish, 33 reptiles, 184 species of birds and 43 mammals.

Look for `birds of prey" such as the Serpent Eagle, Grey-headed Fishing-eagle, Crested Hawk Eagle and the occasional winter visitor; the Osprey. Another interesting sight at Udawalawe is the groups of Malabar Pied Hornbill flying from one tree top to another.

After breakfast, you will transfer to Sinharaja Rain Forest Reserve in a private vehicle. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the last of Sri Lanka"s tropical lowland forest. Spend the day on the trails in this incredible rainforest, filled with rapid waterfalls, fresh rivers and unique species.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve

In the morning and afternoon, enjoy a bird watching excursion, in search of endemics and mixed species of bird flocks. The mixed species bird flock study of Sinharaja forest has been continuing since 1981 and is considered to be the world"s longest bird-flock study. Among the Birding highlights are probable sightings of magnificent endemics such as Red-faced Malkoha and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie. Some of the other endemic birds at Sinharaja are: Sri Lanka Jungle-fowl, Legge"s Flowerpecker, Sri Lanka White-eye, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Black-capped and Yellow-eared Bulbul and Sri Lanka Grackle.

Wadduwa

Today, you will be transferred to the beautiful beaches of Wadduwa. After an hour long drive you can bask in the warm, golden sun on the beautiful shore of Wadduwa Beach. Stroll down the beach on the fine, sparkly grey sand or take a swim in the turquoise, clear waters that is characterized by remarkably calm waves.

Reservations/Booking and Deposits:  To book a Tour, each Traveler (or leader of a Group of Travelers) must submit:

 

A.     A completed booking form signed electronically by the main Traveler. By submitting the booking form on the payments page, the traveler accepts our full Terms and Conditions.  

B.     A deposit of 30% of the Tour price (minimum $250 per person), is due immediately upon booking.

C.     The full balance of the trip cost is due ninety days (90) before the trip departure date.

D.      If you book your trip with us ninety days (90 days) or less before the departure date, the full cost of the trip is due at that time.

E.       In the instance payment is made by certified check or wire transfer, reservations will only commence once the check is cleared.

F.       Availability of Services and Accommodations cannot be guaranteed until a Tour is booked.  We will exercise our best efforts to book the Services and Accommodations described in the Tour Itinerary, however, in busy seasons and with client bookings made within 90 days of Tour date, we may be forced to offer substitutes.  In this instance we will notify you as soon as possible and try to substitute comparable Services and Accommodations based on availability.

G.      Ticketing & credit card processing for international transport and other select domestic airfare pertaining to a specific country is done by a 3rd party and not included in your total land package price unless otherwise stated.

H.      Cancellations of confirmed bookings 90 days or more prior to departure will receive full refund minus a $250 (per person) administrative fee and any non-refundable paid fees (e.g. non-refundable airfare, cruise or hotel deposits). 60-89 days will be subject to loss of 30% of program price. 30-59 days will be subject to loss of 50% of program price. 29 days or less will be subject to loss of 100% of program price.
